Kochi (Cochin)

Kochi, hailed as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea,’ stands as a pivotal city within Kerala. It forms an integral part of the Kochi urban community, the largest of its kind in Kerala and a significant port city. Boasting a population of 677,381 within its corporation limits and over 21 lakhs in the metro area, Kochi holds sway as the commercial and industrial hub of the state. Nestled in the Ernakulam district of central Kerala, Kochi sits 220 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s capital.

Historically, areas such as Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Wellington Island, Vypin Island, Kannamali, Chellanam, and Kumbalangi comprised what was formerly known as Kochi. Presently, Kochi Corporation and its surrounding urban expanse collectively form Kochi city. However, there exists a taluk named Kochi encompassing Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Wellington Island, Vypin Island, Palluruthy, Kannamali, Chellanam, and Kumbalangi. Prior to the formation of Kerala as a state, Kochi reigned as a native kingdom, spanning parts of present-day Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Notably, Kochi hosts a crucial naval base for India and boasts an international airport.
